Is it time for Web Hosting regulations?

When you read this article, be aware I have no issues with small businesses or web hosts, this article is debating should web hosts actually have some form of regulation or making it more “ethical” in the larger sense- read on as I explain many problems I have experienced.

If you are an owner of a website you have likely used many “not well-known” web hosts and if you have, you likely have screwed over at one point. As you may know that if you wanted to get into the web hosting industry you could do it for, well, nothing if you actually looked around.

Host watch: TopHostingUK

Having hosted many websites in the past, I know full well what it is like hosting people data. To some it is their life, their business, their income, their eduction, their fun, their past time and so much more and it really annoys me when people run cowboy web hosts.

So this article is about the web host called “North West Web Solutions” and what seems to be directly related to them – “Top Hosting UK”. Right from the start we have a typical website written in such bad English (look on the status page). Judging from their website we also can see there is very little technical experience from anyone and every solution to their problem seems to be to get a new server which they seem to claim is better and better each time but if that is true is something I can not comment on.

Legal thief

Having been within the hosting industry I have seen many web hosts oversell their disk space but more importantly their data transfer and ultimately their bandwidth. This article is not about that though as I am sure you can read the horrors of mass overselling on Webhosting Talk but rather more about the oversell of bandwidth on the backend of the Internet – The Internet Service Providers (ISPs).

It is no secret that Internet Service Providers do over sell their bandwidth as otherwise they would not make as large amount of profit (no matter what ISP tells you, they are lying until they can prove otherwise which they have NOT yet done at the time of posting). They know or rather they hope that not everyone will use their connections at the same time as if they do then they know everything is going to lagging hell.

I am sure your Internet Service provider does the same. Go and check their terms of service and if it says something like the following then you can be sure your Internet Service Provider is overselling.

In order to give the best service possible, we limit your max speeds during peek times in order to allow others to have  a good browsing experience.

What that basically means is the following:

LOL we are so totally over selling our bandwidth and if people starts to try and use what they paid for during peek hours when everyone else is on then our systems is going to crash and burn LOL

Oh and if we see you using to much data transfer out of your unlimited amount which we can not physically supply anyway then we are going to ban you for “excess amount of usage”. Oh and we also do not give your MAC addresses without maxing out your credit card LOLZOALG

Thing is, Internet Service Providers simply can not handle the amount of people they are selling too. They really just hope you do NOT use what you pay for and if you do then they will either cap you further (and then blame it on you are using to much), block you or something on those lines.

I am sure you are now asking – But at least it is cheaper for me. Due to overselling their bandwidth they are passing the savings onto me. Well the answer is no they are not. You are not getting any savings out of it and ultimately, you are losing OUT on what you pay for as you simply can not use it (if you get the full speed in the first place).

And Internet Service Providers will not admit it although everyone knows they do it as simply if they do then customers will moan saying they are not getting what they pay for.

So what happens when you actually complain about your Internet connection being capped. Well, it sounds something like this:

You: Hello. I am currently ringing up wondering why my Internet connection speed is less then 512kbps even though I pay for a 8mb broadband and have a unlimited data transfer plan.

Support: नमस्ते, मेरा नाम एलन है

You: Umm, hello ?

Support: आज मैं तुम्हें कैसे मदद कर सकता

You: Do you speak English ?

Support: क्या आप चाहते हैं कि साथ आलू

You: Can I speak to someone else ?

Support: मैं समर्थन कर रहा हूँ .. me no do ?

You: Can I speak to a manager please ?

Being forwarded please hold…

Manager: مرحبا كيف يمكنني مساعدتك اليوم

You: Oh fuck this shit.

And then when you come to cancelling it the same thing happens. So ya to sum it all up. Internet Service Providers do not provide you with what you are actually paying for and if you use to much then you are kicked off.

Oh well, 3G time I guess.

Unlimited hosting does not exist

Web hosting is very important if you want to get a website hosting as it is this that allows people to host a website in the first place. Many years ago you was able to get a web host for about £5 a month which given you something like 500MB hard drive space and maybe 2GB data transfer.

Over the years that bandwidth and hardware got cheaper and cheaper and it got to a point in which people started to offer things like 10GB hard drive space, 100GB data transfer for around the same price of £5 a month.

However it did not stop then. Finally some people started to offer unlimited web hosting. Basically what this means is you can use as much data transfer you like, hard drive space you like for just a low price of something like £3 a month (I am sure if you shop around, you can find it for $1.00 a year).

Picking the right host

For the last 8 years I have hosted this very website on so many websites that if Tweaked for your Pleasure was a whore that it would have to many sexually transmitted diseases and likely would be laying on the floor dying while trying to pass on it’s last breath. Picking a right web host is very important as your website WILL depend purely on how good your web host is.

I am sure if you have looked around for a web host before what you roughly check for is speed and price and I would bet that most people will not look for more then that. So today I am going to talk about what I look for in a web host so that if you are looking for a web host that you will not get screwed over.

BurstNET – My Review

Cjb, Fasthost, The Hosting, Shacow, The Planet, Galaxy Solutions, Saidcom, Gretzkyhosting, FDCServers, DME Hosting and now BurstNET has joined the list of past web hosts / data centers that I have used over the years of Tweaked for your Pleasure life and this time I am going to write a little review on BurstNET.

Overall I would have to say my experience was good but there was some hipcups with their service but for the price they charge I don’t actually expect much else. So, for the review…

Support

I will start of that with BurstNET support seems to be quite varied. Overall BurstNET would tend to reply within 1 – 4 hours but there have been times when posting on Web Hosting Talk actually got them to reply faster then they normally would. Maybe it is because BurstNET representative on there and jumping your tickets up but I do not know why.
