Hosting a blog as pure HTML only

Writing on Tweaked for your Pleasure is something I have always enjoyed doing and I feel it is something I will be updating for many years to come but one thing I do hate is how much it costs to run Tweaked for your Pleasure.

With this in mind, I am going to experiment – I want to host this website purely for free and while I could toss this onto most free hosts with PHP I decided to set myself a couple of goals for it to be successful.

  • It has to run on ANY free web that allows FTP uploading or something like it.
  • It does not have to rely on PHP or MySQL.
  • I must use WordPress for adding new posts from my end.
  • Guests MUST be able to post a comment.

How I do backups

Screenshot 20200708 170226.png

If there is one thing I will stress repeatedly to everyone is that it is very important to not only make backups but to also test those backups and today I thought I would go over how I do my backups for a couple of websites.

The first thing I will state is for personal websites I prefer to do these manually rather than automatically but each step is easy to automate and for the database side of things I do run a plugin that does that part. Without further delay let’s go into a bit of detail about how I manually make these backups and why I do it this way!

Trip to the past

As my old viewers may have noticed (if you have not noticed it, I really hope you are a blind user) that Tweaked for your Pleasure has “downgraded” back to the original theme used during 2007 to 2010 or was it 2009, I can not remember anymore. Anyhow as much as this is a delight … Read more

Lighttpd and JetPack

As you may have heard, the creators of WordPress has created a new plugin called JetPack. While I will not explain it as the link to the left will explain it far easier than me (although this link is a good place to start with: Jetpack to the WP.com Cloud), I am posting about how it may have issues with Lighttpd.

When it first came out I decided to give it a try and it never worked. Posted on Twitter and people advised about disabling cache software like WP Super Cache or W3 Total Cache. Either way, it never worked. The next thing was to disable Cloudflare which also never worked.

Another one bite the dusts

For my more loyal readers, you are likely aware that in the year 2008 I wrote an article called “Reasons why you shouldn’t use a free forum host” which outlined a few problems with using a free forum host. While it was not my best written work (is any ?) it did explain that if you was to use a free forum host then make sure to keep backups if you can.

A few days ago I learnt that IPBFree went off-line suddenly and so many forum administrators have now finally lost their forums and likely had no backups what so ever. Searching around, all I can see about what happened was that IPBFree was taken off-line relating to DMCA matters which does not surprise me as IPBFree was a forum service filled with warez forums.

The dawn of new webmasters

Every New Year is seen by many as a new chance to do things they wanted to do or something like that but sadly I do not see it like that. I see that every new year, technology is getting better and better. Sure, some will see this as a good thing but every year … Read more
