Trip to the past

As my old viewers may have noticed (if you have not noticed it, I really hope you are a blind user) that Tweaked for your Pleasure has “downgraded” back to the original theme used during 2007 to – 2010 or was it 2009, I can not remember anymore.

Anyhow as much as this is a delight to a few of you, I suppose I best take a few minutes to post about why this has happened and the future or whatever I am going to type about and you are going to read anyway, even if you do not enjoy these types of posts.

Dating back many years which is higher than my viewers average IQ, a friend of mine called Adam Wright created his own little Dr Who show which ultimately gave birth to what he calls “Wrights Productions”.

Skipping loads of history no one cares about, he created the first website using Ellisfamily.TK fansite and then created the first Wrights Productions website using HTML, MkPortal, e107, WordPress and then TFYP.Network.

Well thing is, it did not work out well. Before merging back, Wrights Productions had it’s own little community which got killed off during the merge and then my community that did not care so much about his videos. Sure, there was some issues as people brought up that maybe Wrights Productions should have been renamed as TFYP.Productions to fit in but it was not his fault.

Two main issues was both me and Tweaked for your Pleasure. No matter how much I try to sugar coat it, this site will always be a place for me to rant and that is all. The second was the lack of content from myself to Wrights Productions such as Playing Games with Snat.

Anyway back to the theme. Ricko Mann kindly made me a new theme which was simply titled as “TFYP” and kindly developed it for both the English and Hebrew versions of this website. When Wrights Productions merged with Tweaked for your Pleasure to form “TFYP.Network” in a very loose sense that Adam adapted the TFYP theme.

However what happened is his whole site become dependent on it such as his page layouts and all that and neither me, Adam or Ricko had time to redesign a unique theme for Wrights Productions and one condition I had with the spilt was that both sites looked different to each other.

So in the interest of making sure this happened, to the delight to a few viewers, I decided to change back to the old theme and re-add the features I needed from the newer one to this one. Wrights Productions then kept the Hebrew version of the theme and applied the English changes to recreate their blue layout.

So there you go, that was the divorce settlement and hopefully Wrights Productions re-gain it’s little community in one time. That said, I should also talk about Just a Community. I closed it down for two reasons which were:

  • Lack of people posting / replying.
  • TFYP.Network disbanding.

When I closed it down that a few people contacted me about it. I would not mind giving Just a Community another go in the future but if so, it would be it’s own site ran by someone else while I just give input. If you are willing to help out – let me know by using this pretty form.

To the people who did enjoy Wrights Productions, you can still catch their videos at Wrights Productions or by following them on their YouTube channel by clicking here. Snat’s vBlog, Tweaked for your Viewing Pleasure and Playing Games with Snat future will be published in the future but soon an archive will be up on the video page which link I have yet to figure out where to put it.

Lighttpd and JetPack

As you may have heard, the creators of WordPress has created a new plugin called JetPack. While I will not explain it as the link to the left will explain it far more easy then me (although this link is a good place to start with: Jetpack to the WP.com Cloud) , I am posting about how it may have issues with Lighttpd.

When it first came out I decided to give it a try and it never worked. Posted on Twitter and people advised about disabling cache software like WP Super Cache or W3 Total Cache. Either way, it never worked. The next thing was to disable CloudFlare which also never worked.

Another one bite the dusts

For my more loyal readers, you are likely aware that in the year 2008 I wrote an article called “Reasons why you shouldn’t use a free forum host” which outlined a few problems with using a free forum host. While it was not my best written work (is any ?) it did explain that if you was to use a free forum host then make sure to keep backups if you can.

A few days ago I learnt that IPBFree went off-line suddenly and so many forum administrators have now finally lost their forums and likely had no backups what so ever. Searching around, all I can see about what happened was that IPBFree was taken off-line relating to DMCA matters which does not surprise me as IPBFree was a forum service filled with warez forums.

The dawn of new webmasters

Every New Year is seen by many as a new chance to do things they wanted to do or something like that but sadly I do not see it like that. I see that every new year, technology is getting better and better.

Sure, some will see this as a good thing but every year more and more people are getting online. Now this is not a bad thing at all, but everyday I see a new website open up within the hour. Now, I am not saying it is a bad thing in itself people opening websites but what has happened to the days when it took days to even get things online ?

I remember the days when it took ages to write up a few HTML pages and it took even longer for the modem to dial up to your ISP and when it finally did it would be so slow that it took ages to even upload. I recall the days when in order to get a website like this (and originally I did the following to get it up and working) that you had to download a script like WordPress which back then would have taken you 40-60 minutes to download and then you extracted it all. After that, you would have filled in all the MySQL detail but back then you would not have had all these control panels that does it all for you but rather you had to make the database yourself.

Once you done all that, you then had to upload it all to your web space. Back then, hosting was not like it is now. Finding a web host was hard as you had to look for one that supported PHP and whatever you needed and the likes of 5GB HDD space back then was nearly impossible to find. Now, you have everyone offering free hosting to anyone that may need it. Free hosting today is honestly much better then it was in the past. In the past, you would have likely went with a free host that went down so often that you would not believe it. Now most free host (well, at least those that supports themselves) are giving a service that is comparing to paid hosting. While this article will not get into that now, I am sure I will do one about it later).

Then uploading the files was annoying. You would have to start your upload and wait a few hours as it slowly uploaded each file one by one using FTP (or in some cases a file manager). Now, I can get WordPress installed within 5 minutes if I am using an online installer script or 10 minutes if I have to download/upload the actual files myself. These days, anyone is able to call themselves a webmaster by just uploading a couple of files and blam – an instant website.

But none of this is bad. Services like WordPress, Blogger, 000webhost, Ultima Development Laboratories, InvisionFree and Forumer offers anybody to be able to put their beliefs and their thoughts onto the Internet for free and is not the Internet all about a free and open commutation network ?

Or do I just miss being able to charge people £10 for a CMS installation.

Using more then one domain with qTranslate

Update: I have been able to restore the config file. This is not tested on the latest version of qTranslate and WordPress but should work anyway.

This was a question I kept asking myself and couldn’t work out how to do it. qTranslate (WordPress plugin) would only allow you to use subdomains for the different languages (such as en.domain or he.domain) or using paths (such as domain/en/ or domain/he/). For a while, I used the path for the different languages on Tweaked for your Pleasure however subdomains or the path sadly wasn’t enough for me.

I wanted to be able to use two different domains for the two langauges. The main reason I wanted to do it is because I had the domains and I didn’t want to use subdomains. So, I wanted to see if anyone knew how to use different domains. On qTranslate forums there wasn’t any answers so I decided to have a look myself.
