Let’s play Maths

March 3rd, 2010 Snat Posted in Maths 18 Comments »

Two days ago, quite early in the morning I got a message from Wild Cat on MSN quoting the exact following:

so are you doing some article about maths, maybe a puzzle for your adoring public?

Now, I am going to look like an idiot but I actually thought that Wild Cat meant about the hidden area on my portfolio website so I replied with cba and then got this reply. However I then learnt what Wild Cat was talking about World Math’s Day. Now rather then explaining what this day is about, just click – World Maths Day 2010.

Probability Question

February 13th, 2009 Snat Posted in Maths 16 Comments »

Right, today post is gonna be a “simple” maths question. The person who guesses the answer right first will be getting a prize and the person that can explain why so, will get a better prize :)

I am giving 48 hours for this. I can rest you asure that if you look over it and think, you will see the answer. If you can’t work it out, don’t worry, alot of people can’t ;) Well done for clicking the Hebrew link, the answer is here :P

Going first in this game gives you an advantage., that is the key part.

P(A) != 0.5

So, in this answer, lets  p be the probability of winning if you go first.

That is the same as 1/6 + 5/6 * probability of losing if you go first, since there’s 1/6 chance you win first time, and 5/6 the game continues starting with the opponent’s turn

p = 1/6 + 5/6 * (1-p)

Which goes down to p = 6/11

So P(A) = 5/11 (since Kyle goes second)

So the answer is ( 5/6 * 5/6 * 5/6 * 1/6 ) / (5/11), which is exactly two Seventy Five / Twelve ninety six or roughly about 21.1%

June 23rd, 2008 Snat Posted in Maths No Comments »

While it is birthday today, I have no plans on coming online and post a blog post so I have posted this in advance. Today, is not going to be anything wacky but just some simple things you may not know about mathemactics.

Sequential Inputs of numbers with 8
1 x 8 + 1 = 9
12 x 8 + 2 = 98
123 x 8 + 3 = 987
1234 x 8 + 4 = 9876
12345 x 8 + 5 = 98765

And yet people still thinks Maths is useless.

June 13th, 2008 Snat Posted in Maths, Science No Comments »

Many, many years ago, I can still remember my Math’s teacher will always debate with my Science teacher about who field of expertise is the more pure.

Even to now, I have always sided that maths is the more pure (You can tell what I am best at can’t ya ;) ). Anyway, below is a little comic that shows what I mean. (Click it to make it bigger).

This comic comes from xkcd. This comic may also have a different licence for use then Snat.co.uk.

Ingore this post as it is mearly making sure that I can post math stuff easily – It is needed for other pages ;)

Basically, if you see an image below, it worked.
